Lismore Castle Arts
04 Jun - 09 Sep, 2015
Lismore Castle Arts is delighted to announce that the annual international exhibition for 2014 is a solo show by Polish artist Wilhelm Sasnal, ‘Take Me To The Other Side’, which opens on 18 April and continues until 21 September at Lismore Castle Arts, Lismore, Co Waterford, Ireland.
Wilhelm Sasnal is considered one of the world’s leading contemporary artists, working primarily in painting but also in film. His work explores a diverse range of subjects, from daily observations of his family to figures from history who fascinate him. The exhibition brings together 16 works, spanning the decade to 2014, which allude to Andersen but also to Sasnal’s observations of contemporary life. Alongside the paintings there are two new film pieces commissioned by Lismore Castle Arts.
‘Take Me To The Other Side’ explores the influence on Sasnal of the author Hans Christian Andersen. In the 1970s the collected works of Andersen were published in Poland and illustrated by contemporary illustrators. As a young boy Sasnal often read these books and their vivid illustrations have continued to inspire his practice. Other influences in the exhibition include the artists Caspar David Friedrich and Christen Kobke and the rock groups The Stooges and Spacemen 3.
To coincide with the exhibition launch there will be a panel discussion at Lismore Castle Arts on contemporary painting. The catalogue, featuring an essay by Brian Dillon and an interview with Wilhelm Sasnal, published by Lismore Castle Arts will also be launched on 25 April.
