Carolina Aguirre (b.1990, Chile) is an Argentinean artist based in London. Her interdisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, writing, and video. The mythopoetic works question the experience of belonging as it relates to location, nature, and otherness through a psychological and anthropological lens. Belonging is chosen as an embodied and emotional access point to wider themes of environmentalism and identity politics resulting from mobility.
For The Mill, Carolina has made a unique response to the building and atmosphere of the space, creating an immersive installation. Columnar sculptures merge with the existing architecture, inviting the viewer into a dimly-lit, calcified forest. The abandoned Mill becomes the setting for a quiet reckoning, which must take place away, through the woods.
Once a hub of activity and a source of essential nourishment, where water used to flow, now The Mill is a place to think of traces and ghosts. Both crumbling and standing, we become conscious of how the natural order is for things to decay and others to take its place.
