Lismore Castle Arts is delighted to present Conduit’s Call - a solo exhibition by Alicia Reyes McNamara at St Carthage Hall. The exhibition will see the artist create a unique installation especially for the space, with a one-off floor work, presented alongside new sculptures and paintings.
As a Mexican-Irish American and culturally mixed person, Alicia Reyes McNamara is invested in opening up the concept of an in-between space, where identity is fluid and where cultures and their languages intersect. Alicia’s practice explores the potential of things to transcend their own definition and acquire new life or meaning.
Alicia produced this new body of work after researching the female voice in pre-Christian rituals and their role in providing safe passage, a conduit for the soul on its journey to the afterlife. Informed by the banished practice of keening – the act of wailing in grief for the decreased - the work is an investigation of folklore and rituals around loss, mourning and healing. Conduit’s Call explores the keener as a liminal figure that exists between life and death.
Alicia Reyes McNamara recently received her MFA from the University of Oxford’s Ruskin School of Art, after completing her BFA at California College of the Arts. Her work was included in the Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition at the Bluecoat and ICA in 2016.
Berlin Opticians Gallery presents and promotes artists’ works with a programme of online-only exhibitions along with nomadic iterations of physical exhibitions in various unique locations. For more information visit: www.berlinopticiansdublin.com.
