Lismore Castle Arts
25 Aug, 2023
Join us for a tour of 3 artist’s installations in Lismore Castle’s Stable Yard, with curator Paul McAree.
First exhibited at St Carthage Hall, Lismore in 2014, and now permanently housed at Lismore Castle, Dorothy Cross’ Eye of Shark sees twelve reclaimed cast-iron baths laid out quietly in the Upper Stable yard. Each bath is lined with gold along the scum line where the dirt normally accumulates, suggesting an alchemical transformation from dirt to gold. This line of gold lies at the place where air meets water and beneath the surface of water, below the depths, is home to shark, and housed within a tabernacle on the wall, lies the eye of a shark.
Lismore Castle Arts is delighted to announce we have commissioned Niamh O’Malley to create a new permanent artwork for the former stable yard at Lismore Castle. We are delighted to acknowledge the support of the Arts Council via the Commissions Award in the delivery of this ambitious new work. The work formed part of Niamh O’Malley’s presentation at the Venice Biennale in 2022, and has now been permanently installed in the stable yard in Lismore.
Anthony Gormley’s Learning to be I (1992), was for many years installed in the Lower Garden at Lismore Castle, most recently in the Yew Tree Avenue. Now beautifully restored, we invite you to see this familiar figure in its new home in the stable yard.
This event is free, however booking is essential. Book here
